Stash enhancement or destashing?

During the past few months, I have had the more or less secret project of destashing. My ideal being Ulrike's stash. However, last week, I realized that my stash will probably last for the next 10 - 15 years. Which means, that I will be over 50 before I can start buying yarn at my gusto again???

Who knows whether I will still be knitting in 10 years? My mother didn't, although she was an avid knitter when young. It is a terrible thought - at present - and I would much rather go on knitting for another 40 years. However, it made me think, that maybe the time when I can knit all those wonderful new yarns or luxury yarns, I haven't been able to afford in the past, will never come.

Therefore, I decided that while I'll still try to destash (after all I love most of the yarn in my stash), I'll also not deny myself the pleasure of buying new yarn and knitting with it.

Anyway, here are my new purchases:



Während der letzten Monate habe ich das mehr oder weniger geheime Projekt dees Wollvorratabbaus verfolgt. Mein Ideal dabei war Ulrike. Letzte Woche habe ich jedoch realisiert, dass mein Wollvorrat für die nächsten 10 - 15 Jahre reicht. Und so unangenehm der Gedanke ist einen Riesenberg an Wolle zu hinterlassen, so fürchterlich ist der Gedanke erst mit über 50 wieder neue Wolle einkaufen zu können. Wer weiß, ob ich in 10 Jahren überhaupt noch stricken kann? Meine Mutter, die als junge Frau sehr viel strickte, tat es nur noch selten. Heute - mit über 80 - überhaupt nicht mehr. Es könnte also sein, dass ich zwar noch die schönen Garne aus meinem Vorrat verstricke, aber die Zeit nicht kommen wird, die interessanten neuen Garne oder die Luxuswollen, die ich mir früher nie leisten konnte, zu stricken. Daher werde ich zwar weiter versuchen, meinen Wollvorrat abzubauen, andererseits mir aber nicht das Vergnügen nehmen, neue Garne, die mich interessieren zu kaufen und zu verstricken. Ob ich dabei wählerischer werde und vielleicht gar ein Woll-Snob? Wie dem auch sei, hier sind meine Neueinkäufe:
Nachdem ich bei Tina gelesen hatte, dass es nun Knitpicks bei KnittyBitty gibt, konnte ich nicht widerstehen und "mußte" eine Bestellung aufgeben.

Baby Kimono

My dear friend Ingrid has - as I may have said before - a wonderful eye for lovely patterns. She has knit this baby kimono a couple of times already. So, when my husband's collegue gave birth to a boy, I thought, I would give the pattern a try and I did not regret it. It is a lovely pattern, knits up quickly and not much sewing to do.

needle size: 3 mm
amount needed: 2 balls

Die liebe Ingrid hat - wie ich schon erwähnt habe - ein gutes Auge für hübsche Muster. Sie hat diesen Babykimono schon einige Male gestrickt und als nun eine Kollegin meines Mannes einen Sohn bekam, probierte ich es auch mal. Mit dem Ergebnis bin ich sehr zufrieden.

Book of the Month: Half of a Yellow Sun/Die Hälfte der Sonne

For a very long time, I have wanted to blog about this novel and recommend it to everyone. Here is the text from the official website:

This isn't an easy novel when it comes to content, but it is a deeply satisfying novel, very well written, plausible characters and it fulfils the goal of all good literature, it instructs you about the ways of the world.

The only thing I regret is, that I didn't buy her Purple Hibiscus when I was in London where is was part of the "buy 3 pay 2."

Diesen Roman wollte ich schon sehr lange empfehlen. Mich hinterließ er mit diesem Gefühl tiefster Zufriedenheit, das nur sehr gute Literatur hervorruft.

Im Mittelpunkt der Handlung, die vor dem Hintergrund des Nigerianisch-Biafrischen Krieges stattfindet, stehen Olanna und ihre Zwillingsschwester, beide aus gut-betuchtem Hause. Olanna hat ihre Privilegien aufgegeben, um mit einem Universitätsprofessor zusammenzuziehen, bei dem die zweite Hauptfigur Ugwu als Diener angestellt ist. Die dritte Figur, um die die Erzählung kreist, ist der englische Geliebte ihrer Zwillingsschwester. Diese Figurenkonstellation erlaubt es Adichie, sowohl das intellektuelle wie auch das bäuerliche Biafra/Nigeria darzustellen ebenso wie Kolonialismus und sein Ende. Neben den politischen und ethnischen Konflikten im Makrokosmos, kommt es aber auch zu persönlichen Konflikten im Mikrokosmos, die die Ideale, Loyalität und Liebe der Charaktere auf die Probe stellen.

Ich bedauere nur, dass ich in London nicht den anderen Roman von Adichie, den es dort gerade reduziert gab, gekauft habe.

The Golden Compasss

Lately, I heard, that the movie The Golden Compass has not been a succes at the box office and therefore, there will be no sequels to it. What a pity, now we won't get more of those wonderful knits. This cardigan has been inspired by the one Lyra wears and you can see how proud my daughter is and how much she loves it.

Kürzlich hörte ich, dass es keine Fortsetzung zum Film Der Goldene Kompass geben wird, da der Film an den Kassen nicht erfolgreich war. Wie schade, nun gibt es nicht noch mehr der schönen Stricksachen zu sehen. Diese Jacke ist inspiriert von der Jacke, die Lyra im Film trägt und man kann sehen wie sehr meine Tochter die Jacke mag.

April has passed in a rush. What did I knit?

Here is the list of WiPs I started the month with:

And here is what I finished this month:

2. 3 pairs of socks for myself
3. socks for my mother

Altogether approx. 400 g of yarn from my stash (the Afghan doesn't count as I counted the patches...)!

No yarn purchases were made.

I made slow progress on these projects:

2. Seraphim shawl for ISE 6

Thus, I'll start May with 5 WiPs. I plan to work on everything but the Mondnacht stole. I suppose it will have to wait another month to be picked up.
