Novels

As I currently lack photos to show, I want to recommend a few novels, I have read over the past few months:

John Irving, A Widow for One Year.

Actually, I listened to the audiobook available from audible. It was excellently read and the story is brilliant. You may know the movie "The Door in the Floor", which however covers only the first part of the novel. I do not want to write in any length about it, read it.

Justine Picardie, Daphne

In this novel, you have three story lines. In one Daphne DuMaurier features who goes through a marital crisis while she works on a biography of Branwell Bronte. In the second, a Mr Symington, who is a Bronte fanatic hording original papers, who was once member of the Bronte society, but fell into disgrace. Du Maurier and Symington exchange letters on Branwell. (This is authentic). In the third story line a PhD student features who does research on DuMaurier and is unhappily married to an elder professor - a "Rebecca-like" relationship. The novel is not very demanding, but entertaining and a very good summer read. As the cover says: "Bookworms will love it."

Tove Jansson, fair play

I had no idea, Tove Jansson wrote adult fiction, too. This is a book full of small biographical sketches written in a very clear, fascinating prose.

New Favs

Meet my new favourite books/Meine neuen Lieblingsbücher:

Sarah Wiener's new book is a lovely book of delicious cakes, cookies and desserts. They are not all brand new or unusual, but the book compiles a good many of my favourite cakes and desserts. I have tried several of the recipes and they have all been a success.

Sarah Wieners neues Buch gefällt mir sehr gut.

I love the paintings in this small book (Sara Midda's South of France). The colors are magnificent and inspiring. Having a look at the pages of this book transfers me directly to Southern France. What more can one ask for, but be taken away from grey Berlin to a sunny holiday?

Sure, an MP3 Player is not a book, but a medium you can save books to. Over the past few weeks, I have hardly been able to concentrate on a book in written form. Being normally an avid reader, this means a rather hard time for me. Fortunately, the spoken word is much easier. Thus, I have listened to a number of podcasts (my favs: Knitpicks and The Book Review) and audiobooks lately. My latest audiobook is Middlemarch by George Eliott - what a splendid novel!

Summer Reading II

Every summer, I feel an urge to read mysteries. Here are a few novels that more or less qualify as mystery or at least as suspenseful reading:

Jasper Fforde, The Jane Eyre Affair

Not everyone's cup of tea, I enjoyed this parallel universe. While in London, I bought the new one, had to as the endangered novel is Pride and Prejudice.

Sujata Massey, The Salaryman's Wife/Die Tote im Badehaus

The first in a series of cozy mysteries with amateur sleuth Rei Shimura won the famous Agatha Award. Rei, half-American and half-Japanese, by the one seen as American by the others as Japanese, is on holidays from her teaching shop when she finds the corpse of Yegetsu Nakamura, a rather rich wife of a Japanese salaryman. Noone, but Rei seems to doubt the natural cause of Yegetsu's death, but many want it to stay a natural death. The novel is free of horror and splatter scenes, a modern Miss Marple, very nice.

New book and new socks

I finished a pair of socks this week. They are knit from the Regia Fassett yarn Christa gave me for Christmas. I really love the color. This yarn doesn't need a stitch pattern. They are beautiful in their simplicity.

And while I was looking for an out-of-print book for my daughter on Jokers booklooker, I found this out-of-print book that I had had on my wish-list while it was still in-print. It didn't take me much thinking before I pressed "order". It is such a lovely book full of paintings related to the fibre arts.
