Ally Pally

You have probably read about Ally Pally here, here or here. And this is lucky, because I didn't take pictures of their stalls. I was too occupied fondling their yarn and talking to the people there to take pics. Therefore, I have only pics of stalls I did not buy anything from or talk to the people!
Ihr habt sicher schon hier, hier oder hier über Ally Pally gelesen und das ist gut, weil ich keine Photos an den Ständen gemacht habe, an denen ich damit beschäftigt war mich zu unterhalten oder Wolle zu kaufen. Dabei wären diese Stände natürlich gerade am interessantesten.




Let us start at the beginning, before we went to Alexandra Palace. While at breakfast, Ingrid received a parcel from her SP Dorene who sent her a skein of marvelous Handmaiden Casbah through Socktopus. Now, you have to envision this parcel. The yarn is wrapped up in this beautiful pink tissue paper, sealed with a Socktopus sticker and a Socktopus stitch marker and then the whole thing is put into a silver envelope! I fell in love with the yarn and the packing all at once. So, no wonder that hours later, I bought this Handmaiden Casbah from Socktopus at Ally Pally. And yes, it was wrapped up like the package Ingrid received. And yes, I got one of those cute stitchmarkers, too. We talked to the owner of Socktopus for a while and she is a very nice person, open and doing her business with love. I also found this Elizabeth Zimmerman book at their stall - or rather Ingrid found it and as it was the last copy, she let me have it and ordered one from them. Thank you Ingrid, you are such a great pal.


Aber zum Anfang des Tages. Noch beim Frückstück bekam Ingrid von ihrem neuen SP Dorene ein Päckchen von Socktopus. Das Päckchen müßt ihr euch vorstellen, ein silberner Umschlag, darin in rosafarbenes Seidenpapier verpackt ein Knäuel Handmaiden Casbah Sockenwolle, das ganze mit Socktopus Aufkleber und einem wunderschönen Maschenmarkierer. Natürlich war ich auf diesen Stand sehr gespannt und konnte dann der Casbah nicht widerstehen. Mein Einkauf wurde übrigens genauso liebevoll verpackt. Außerdem entdeckte Ingrid noch E.Z. Opinionated Knitter. Es war das letzte vorrätige Exemplar und Ingrid trat es freundlicherweise an mich ab. Sie hat sich eines bestellt.


But back to the beginning of the day. Ingrid and I did not drive up to Ally Pally on our own, we picked up three more knitters on our way and so were really doing it environmental-friendly. Our partners in crime were the amazing Fiona (I thought I had taken a pic of her and her gorgeous knitted dress, but no, I have none), and Tessa and Jill, whom I had met the day before. We were a very lively group and I didn't feel like a stranger at all. Knitters are such great people.



Once we had arrived, we all went our separate ways, only Ingrid and I sticked together all the time. We met Fiona a couple of times, but Tessa and Jill had taken another route apparently. For those of you, who don't know Ally Pally, the knitting and stitching show takes place in three rooms, a great Hall and two smaller ones. We headed straight for the Great Hall and went about business very organized. We walked up and down each lane, starting with the one to the left.
Ingrid nahm außer mir noch drei andere Strickerinnen mit zu Ally Pally. Tessa und Jill hatte ich schon am Tag zuvor kennengelernt, fehlte noch Fiona, die ein phantastischen gestricktes Kleid trug - leider habe ich wohl doch kein Foto davon gemacht. Ingrid und ich blieben die ganze Zeit zusammen und gingen ganz systematisch eine Reihe nach der anderen ab. Für die, die noch nie dort waren, Die Show findet in drei Räumen statt, der großen Halle und zwei kleineren. Wir begannen in der großen Halle und fünf Minuten vor Schluß erreichten wir den letzten Raum.

We had booked tickets for the ROWAN fashion show around lunchtime and up to that point, I had only bought a pair of sock knitting dpns, but we had also saved all the special stalls for after the show. This was the ROWAN give-away:
Wir hatten uns Karten für die ROWAN Modeschau um die Mittagszeit gekauft. Bis dahin hatte ich nur Sockenstricknadeln gekauft, aber die besonderen Stände hatten wir uns noch aufgehoben. Dies gab es übrigens für alle Showbesucher von ROWAN:




I thought that the sweaters shown from the latest ROWAN magazine looked a lot better on the catwalk than in the mag. I do love artistic photography, but in a knitting mag/book I think the priority should go to a clear picture of the pattern. If I have troubles with the written out instruction I will always consult the picture.


Ich fand, dass die Modelle in echt viel besser aussahen, als im letzten ROWAN Heft. Ich mag Photographien sehr, aber in einem Strickheft/-buch geht für mich die Klarheit des Fotos vor der Kunst.
After the show I was really in consumer mood and I bought this at Hipknits along with two Yarn Forward magazines:

I also talked to Kerrie and was very happy to meet her in person, after we had exchanged so many e-mails and after having read her blog for so long. She is just the nice person I expected her to be.

I had been looking for yarn for the Peacock Feather shawl and found it at The Natural Dye Studio. Hasn't this silk been dyed in a gorgeous color?

I couldn't resist this kit for a tea cozy at the Euro Japan Trading Co. stall. I have wanted to knit a tea cozy for a very long time.
Bei der Euro Japan Trading Co. gab es Strickpackungen für Teekannenhauben (oder wie immer Tea cozy übersetzt wird) und ich konnte diesem nicht widerstehen.



Finally, we went to the Habu booth. I was very curious about their yarn and I was not disappointed. It is packed in cute little bundles, you would never think to be enough for any serious project. I touched a cardigan made from their stainless steel yarn. It looks like wire, but feels like wool! Ultimately, I left with this:
Schließlich kamen wir zum Stand von Habu, darauf war ich sehr gespannt gewesen. Ihr Garn ist in ganz kleine Päckchen gepackt (ähnlich wie Bastelbast bei uns). Sie hatten eine Jacke aus ihrem Garn mit Stahlanteil dabei, die aussah wie aus Draht gestrickt, aber sich anfühlte wie Wolle. Ich habe diese zwei Konen gekauft: superfine merino.



Honestly, I think I have been very brave and reasonable with my purchases. I did not buy any Quiviut, although it is the softest fibre imaginable (alpaca is coarse in comparison). I resisted the cashmere handspun, although I loved the colors ( a variation of reds) and I did not pick up Yak, although I was very tempted. They didn't have any red anymore, so that saved me. However, had we gone back a second day, I would not have been able to resist these fibres again.

Auf der Messe gab es aber noch viele luxuriöse Garne, die ich nicht gekauft habe, aber sehr glücklich "befummelt" habe: Quiviut - wirklich das mit Abstand weicheste was man sich denken kann. Zum Glück (?) gab es kein rot mehr. Außerdem Yak - schaut euch mal die website an, es gibt dort auch kostenlose Anleitungen und handgesponnenes Kaschmir, in wunderschönen Farben.

At the end of the day, we met with the other three again, compared our purchases and were driven home by Ingrid, all of us very satisfied and worn out from the day (in a good sense of the word). Brave Ingrid, who managed to drive us home safely.

Um 18 Uhr war die Show zu Ende und wir wurden von Ingrid nach Hause gefahren, alle sehr glücklich und erschöpft.
