Evaluation and final yarn acquirements

As the year draws to a close, here comes my final evaluation:

In the past months my knitting was devoted to Christmas presents:

1. A zig zag scarf for my friend Ingrid
2. Sarcelle for my friend Jeannette
3. Helena cardigan
4. another Helena cardigan
5. a cardigan for my nephew
6. Socks for my MIL
7. 3 pairs of baby shoes
8. a Griffindor sweater for my son
9. Lucinda Guy afghan for my daughter
10. a T-Shirt for my daughter
11. Kells
12. arm warmers

The new year starts with the following WiPs:

1. second sock of pair for my husband
2. second sock of another pair started earlier
3. Tre Archi cardigan for myself
4. Wool Peddler shawl for myself.

The past few months I used up 4080 g of yarn. Altogether, this year I reduced my stash of
15 125 gramms, but increased it by 7720 gramms. So, I now own 7 405 gramms less than at the beginning of the year! For next year I have set myself as a goal to further reduce my stash and therefore only allow myself 100 g of new yarn for 500 - 1000 g of knitted up yarn. Thus, I will have approx. 5 to 10 kg less than today.

The picture above shows my latest yarn purchase and knit-related presents. In October my friend Ingrid and her family spent wonderful days with us. She gave me that gorgeous Knitpicks. From Ingrid as well, I received the mag (inside you'll find a picture showing her and myself at the Yarn Harlot's talk on I Knit day), the knitters balm, The Knitting Goddess (not in the pic) and the magnificent paperchase bag for knitter's utensils. My friend Jeannette always knows what makes a knitter's heart leap, this year I unwrapped two skeins of Debbie Bliss Maya in my favourite color.
My friend Ulrike knit a pair of socks from Schneeschaf Autumn Flowers for me. I love them so much, that I couldn't resist buying a skein of Schneeschaf Irish Lace, Candle Flame. The red candle came with the skein!

Vielen Dank!

No blogging

Dear Readers,

I am very sorry, but as I am still ill, I cannot blog at present. However, if you want to see what I have been knitting earlier this year (and maybe knit it yourself), have a look here.

Liebe Leser,

Happy Knitting!

Gschenkle

My only excuse for this late public THANK YOU dear Secret Pal Jule for a wonderful red parcel is that I have been ill for some time.
This parcel arrived a few weeks ago and all the sweets are gone. The yarn sits on my shelf and whispers ideas into my ears...
The greeting card is on my desk bringing color into these grey and rainy days. Thank you very much, you have been a magnificent Secret Pal.

Kells - a meeting with the threading needle - looming

In case you thought I had finished my Kells: there is still a lot to do... this being my least favourite occupation.

Kells - a meeting with a pair of scissors

I have cut the front!

And thank you for all your lovely comments. In fact, this has been my longest WiP/Ufo in my knitter's life. I have started to knit this sweater in 1996!!! And I only recommend it to intarsia fan(atic)s and knitters with a passion for weaving in loose ends...

Kells - a meeting with the sewing needle

Further progress on Kells: Sleeves have been sewn in and both shoulder and side seams closed.

Joanna asked what yarn I used. It is made from cotton, mainly left-overs from other projects, but I also bought some, especially for the blue sections.

SP 12 question of the week

I have missed a couple of SP questions, so here we go:

If you were told you could never again buy yarn, would would your last yarn purchase be?

I would buy Quiviut, poshyarn, Socks that Rock, Wollmeise and all the atelier zitron stock of my LYS. (Oh, and can I order knitpicks yarns and some more of the ones I brought back from London?) ;-)

If you were told you could never knit again, what would be the last thing you’d knit??

An Afghan on 2.5 mm needles that would last 20 years to finish. ;-)

In a given year, how many times do you buy yarn?

I suppose approx. 6 times.

And what is your favorite place to buy yarn from? A festival? A shop? Online? Dish your favorite places!!

My favorite places are: London - either I Knit day or Ally Pally, my LYS Wollkontor and Wollmeise.

Lastly, with Fall in full swing in many areas, what is the one thing you look forward to most?

I look forward to afternoons with tea, knitting and a good book as well as soups. I just love creamy, hot autumn soups.

I’m sure most of us have a proudest moment when it comes to knitting. A project or technique that you’ve tackled and completed beautifully. What is your proudest knitting moment??

Finishing a lace shawl, blocking it and it turns out beautifully.

My proudest finished projects so far are my Carpathian Roses Cardigan and the Snakeskin sweater. Their fit is perfect.

And on the flip side? What is the one thing that you can’t get right? What is that one project that you’ve never been able to complete? Or that you did complete but then hid away instantly because it was too embarrassing?

Sewing is dreadful. I am never satisfied with it.

The most dreadful project was a cardigan that I knit from a different yarn than given in the pattern without swatching. I kept going until I was finished and all that was left was some embroidery. Then my husband - despairing about my stubborness - tried it on and I had to face that it was way too huge. I frogged it. The yarn is still in my stash.

What is the best thing you've ever received in the mail/post?

Every new SP or other swap parcel. Every parcel from my dear friends.
Really, I couldn't pick a single one - as they are all so gorgeous.

What Olympic event would best describe you knitting/knitting style?

I have no clue.

DuD - disappointed

I have finished the Diamond upon Diamond cardigan from Knits Winter01/02 and I am disappointed with the result, so far. the sleeves are too short and the hem curls up. I will now block the cardigan and hope that solves the trouble.

Kells - a meeting with the sewing machine

My Kells is making progress. I have finished back and front as well as the sleeves. Now I have decided to change it into a cardigan. Therefore, it had a meeting with the sewing machine:

Birthday

It has been three weeks since my birthday and I still haven't shown you my wonderful presents.

My dear Secret Pal from Vienna sent a skein of poshyarn (!!!) which is sooooooooooooooooooooo soft, I can hardly stop fondling it. And as you can see one of those terrific Lantern Moon sock knitting needle bags. I drool over it. And last but not least a variation on the theme of chilichoc.

Toll!

My friend Ingrid knit a Forest Canopy shawl for me and added the latest issue of Yarn Forward and a skein of posh yarn!!! I feel so spoilt. The shawl is exaclty the kind of little lovely accessorie I need in windy Berlin.

Christiana, whom I met via Secret Pal as well, sent me a package full of Italian goodies. Delicious spicy rings, gorgeous marzipan, a very funny ring, wonderful yarn I'll probably use for the Brünnhilde gloves, a whistle that brings the sun to your house, a necklace and a soap (they didn't want to be photographed. They are a bit shy, I am afraid). By the way, I am afraid that only a small percentage of the marzipan and rings made it into the pic, the majority had been eaten (or devoured) before.

My very good friend Ulrike sent me a pair of fingerless gloves to go with the scarf I received for Christmas. Aren't they a lovely couple?

My husband and my friends in Berlin, thought they'd feed my love of book

And isn't this sheep bag the cutest thing you have ever seen?

Dear me, I feel so spoilt and have so much fun with my presents, you make me all feel very special.

London

Time flies and I am way behind with blogging about things and stuff I did.

Juni war I Knit Day mit Yarn Harlot in London.
June 6th was I Knit Day with Yarn Harlot in London.

My friend Ingrid

had invited me earlier this year to come over and join her for that day. Of course, I had to go. I have passed 4 splendid days in London. (See the Yarn Harlot rave about London - I couldn't put it any better ;-)).

We went to an excellent exhibition at the Royal Academy (Hammershoi) and to the cinema to see The Duchess.

Saturday was devoted to the I Knit show. It was not as big as Ally Pally, but there were more than enough stalls to spend money and fill the mind with new impressions. There was even time to sit down, knit and talk to other knitters!

Stephanie gave a 90 mins talk that was as entertaining and funny as all of her books. I haven't laughed that much in 90 mins since I was a child. There was a long queue for signing afterwards that I did not join, because a.) I was too tired after an eventful day full of yarn and yarn talk and b.) there was a men's fashion show presenting Erika Knight's new book.

Here is the yarn I took home with me:
Und hier ist meine Wollausbeute des Tages:

My suitcase was still packed when I returned with piles of books and tea from Fortnum and Mason. Among the pile of books I brought home is Jane Brocket's latest book:

and the new ROWAN mag, an excellent issue and the wonderful mittens book by Robin Melanson:

And on Sunday morning we went to Kew Gardens. I love Kew and it is worth a visit in all weather. This time, we took the newly opened Tree Top Walk!

118 steps lead you 18 m up into the air to a 200 m walk on level with the tree tops. Very exciting - and a bit wobbly!

Knit content

Here is a girl's cardigan that I knit during the holidays. I was making it up while knitting. The pattern is a variation of the Herringbone pattern.

Holidays

This year, during our summer holidays, we spent three weeks in Tübingen visiting family and friends. One of the highlights was to meet our new nephew, who is the cutest baby.

However, I also found time to go on some stash enhancement excursions (bringing me farther away from my ideal drawer-size stash).

At Traub , I finally bought a swift (how could I do without one for so long?) and some lovely Alpaca.

Opal was on holidays until the final week, but I hauled in these:

And I drove by Rüfers Wollmarket almost every day, so finally one day when I was on my own, I stopped and bought all these:

Bye the way, although this is a yarn discounter the sales person was very competent! Even has a subscription of Knits and Vogue herself - and knew what I was talking about!!!

Knitty

The Fall Knitty is up - celebrating its 25th issue!
And I proudly present my Anne Shirley Scarf.

Summer Reading II

Every summer, I feel an urge to read mysteries. Here are a few novels that more or less qualify as mystery or at least as suspenseful reading:

Jasper Fforde, The Jane Eyre Affair

Not everyone's cup of tea, I enjoyed this parallel universe. While in London, I bought the new one, had to as the endangered novel is Pride and Prejudice.

Sujata Massey, The Salaryman's Wife/Die Tote im Badehaus

The first in a series of cozy mysteries with amateur sleuth Rei Shimura won the famous Agatha Award. Rei, half-American and half-Japanese, by the one seen as American by the others as Japanese, is on holidays from her teaching shop when she finds the corpse of Yegetsu Nakamura, a rather rich wife of a Japanese salaryman. Noone, but Rei seems to doubt the natural cause of Yegetsu's death, but many want it to stay a natural death. The novel is free of horror and splatter scenes, a modern Miss Marple, very nice.

ISE

I have participated in a number of swaps lately and just noticed that I haven't shown you all the goodies I received.

This wonderful scarf, alpaca yarn, Cherry Tree sockyarn and buttons were in my ISE Angel scarf. After an initial mail, I never heard of my pal again, so Dyane came to my rescue as an angel and sent me these wonderful things. The scarf is very soft and goes very well with my clothes.

And the knitting reader Lisa sent me this terrific parcel for a Ravelry book swap, in time for my birthday:

The Pecan Pralines did not last long, believe me. They were delicious. The color of the yarn is more accurate in the first than in the second picture, but I wanted to show you the lovely band.
And although, I have had Away on my reading list for a long time, I have already read half of The Interpreter of Maladies and think it a very fine short story collection.

EZ baby cardigan as sweater

While away on holidays, we visited our new nephew, who - of course - is the cutest baby ever.

I knit this sweater for him:
Diesen Pulli habe ich für ihn gestrickt:

The pattern is from Elizabeth Zimmerman's Almanach. However, instead of a lace cardigan, I only followed instructions for the saddle and then continued in stockinette and in the round, to create a sweater with a wide neck opening.

The little car is from Lucinda Guy's first children's book.

The yarn came without label, but is a wonderful soft cotton.

OT: Sewing: Book bags

A few months ago, I bought myself an inexpensive sewing machine, because I wanted to start sewing again, but knew I would not have a lot of time for it, as most of my free time goes to knitting.

But, when I participated in a few book-related swaps, I got out the sewing machine and, finally, made these book bags:

One of the patterns saved to the machine.

My sewing machine is even able to stitch words onto fabric! I had to try it.

Meine Nähmaschine stickt sogar Wörter auf Stoff!

This bag was for my friend Ingrid and I knit the fabric on the machine, then felted it and afterwards made the bag. Unfortunately, the parcel has not arrived at her home. I wonder what happened to it.
