London

This September, I went again to London for I Knit. We spent the Friday browsing the stalls, knitting, chatting and taking part in a couple of price raffles. (I won two balls of fyberspates yarn and a copy of Selvedge's Quilt issue). Here are my purchases. The wonderful wonderful Haapsalu Shawl book, two shawl patterns and Habu yarn to knit one as well as Atelier Zitron laceyarn. Yea, I have been seriously affected by a lace shawl fever.

On Saturday, we went to Mrs Moon, which is such a lovely yarn store. I wish I could go there more often. It has a very kind atmosphere. It is a bit off, but Richmond is very nice and has a lovely cinema, too! Moreover, you can go and have dinner at Wagamama.



Im September war ich wieder mal in London für I Knit. Den Freitag haben wir damit zugebracht die Stände gründlich zu inspizieren, dazwischen ein wenig zu stricken und bei einigen Preisverlosungen mitzumachen. (Meine Gewinne: 2 x fyberspates Wolle und eine Ausgabe von Selvedge).

Das hier sind meine Einkäufe: Das wunderschöne Haapsalu Shawl Buch, noch zwei Tuchanleitungen und Habu-Wolle für ein Tuch! Ja ja, ich bin im Lace-Shawl Fieber. Am Samstag waren wir bei Mrs Moon. Das ist ein sehr schöner Wolladen mit einer sehr netten Besitzerin. Richmond ist zwar etwas "off", aber wenn man vorher nach Kew Gardens geht und hinterher noch in das feine Kino und zu Wagamama, hat man einen sehr schönen Tag gehabt.

Der Knäuel Jawoll gehört nicht zu den Einkäufen, den habe ich schon mitgebracht), ebensowenig der Strang Malabrigo und der Strang rechts daneben. Das sind Geburtstagsgeschenke, die ich in London erhielt.

London - Days 3 and 4

Our second day at I knit began with a one-hour workshop by the famous Alice Starmore on stranded knitting. Although I am not a newbie to Fair Isle Knitting, I learned a couple of things. I am very glad, she showed how to properly trim your steek and sew them down flat! She was a very lovely and encouraging woman. Every participant received a small kit for a swatch in VY 2-ply Hebridean yarn:


Unser zweiter Tag bei I Knit begann mit einem workshop der berühmten Alice Starmore zum zweihändigen Fair Isle Stricken. Obwohl ich ja kein Neuling bin im Fair Isle, habe ich doch einiges dazu gelernt. Vor allem wie man den Steek zuschneidet und flach annäht.



After a lunch and knitting break, we met Debbie New for a workshop on Swirl knitting. This kind of knitting involves loads of decr and incr and cast on and bind offs. It is completely different from Fair Isle knitting.

Nach einer Mittags- und Strickpause, gingen wir zum Workshop mit Debbie New. Ihr Swirl knitting setzt sich aus zahlreichen Zu- und Abnahmen, Maschen anschlagen und abketten zusammen. Also eine völlig andere Art zu stricken.



In Debbie New's workshop I felt like I was utterly new to knitting. Everything seemed to work differently. It was very wise of her to do a three hours-workshop, because it takes some time to get into the new way of knitting and especially thinking. She was a very lovely, open lady with a very dry sense of humour. We had a lot of fun in her workshop.

Ich fühlte mich wie eine Anfängerin. Alles schien anders zu sein im Vergleich zum "normalen" Strickvorgang. Der Workshop war nicht umsonst mit 3 Stunden angesetzt, da es wirklich einige Zeit dauert, bis man sich in diese neue Denkweise eingefunden hat. Debbie New selbst war sehr freundlich und hat einen herrlich trockenen Humor.

Both ladies I took workshops with were very impressive. Alice Starmore has an incredible sense of color. Her way of addressing design and knitting is very much in my line of thinking, esp. her love of symmetry.

Ich fand beide sehr beeindruckend. Alice Starmore hat diesen unglaublichen Farbsinn. Ihre Art an Design und Strick heranzugehen, entspricht sehr meiner eigenen Denkweise, vor allem ihre Liebe zur Symmetrie.

Debbie New is a mathematical genius and artist in one person (a rare combination, I guess). Her work is totally stunning and awesome. She really takes knitting a step further. What I miss is the flow of knitting, the meditative and mindless quality "normal" knitting involves. However, if you are looking for a challenge and love zigsaws and maths, this "out-of-the-box-knitting" could be your thing. If my husband were a knitter, he would would do this kind of knitting.

Debbie New ist ein mathematisches Genie und eine Künstlerin in einer Person. Ich finde ihre Arbeiten völlig überwältigend. Sie nutzt das Medium Stricken für künstlerische Projekte, die weit über das was man sonst so sieht hinausgeht.

Ich vermisse allerdings das meditative und fließende Element bei dieser Form des Strickens (ähnlich wie bei Schulz). Wer allerdings eine Herausforderung sucht und Puzzles mag, dazu von Mathe nicht abgeschreckt wird, für den könnte diese Form des Ausdrucks das richtige sein.



On my last day in London, Ingrid and I treated ourselves to breakfast at Orange Pekoe. This is an appraised tea-shop in Barnes and if I would live in the vicinity, you would find me there very often.

An meinem letzten Tag in London, gingen Ingrid und ich zum Orange Pekoe. Das ist ein noch relativ neuer, aber schon hochgelobter Teeladen in Barnes. Würde ich in der Nähe wohnen, dann wäre ich da häufig mit Strickzeug und Lektüre anzutreffen. :D




And then, it was time to pack my stuff and set off to Gatwick again, where I met Steph from the Ravelry Book Group. Unfortunately, I again forgot to take a pic! (I have to admit that I am not a great photographer - as you may have noticed).

Und dann waren die Tage auch schon vorbei und ich mußte wieder nach Gatwick. Dort traf ich mich noch mit Steph von der Ravelry Book Group. Leider vergaß ich wieder ein Foto zu machen (ich bin keine Fotografin, wie man an den wenigen Fotos wohl gemerkt hat :D).

London - day 2

Day two was the first day of the I Knit weekender. My friend Ingrid had it all planned and organised wonderfully. Friday was the day with less visitors than Saturday, so we spent the morning listening to a talk by fabulous Debbie New. She showed many slides of her work, among others one of a knitted kaleidoscop! Here is a picture of her trunk:

Der zweite Tag in London war der erste Tag des I Knit weekender. Meine Freundin Ingrid hatte wie immer alles perfekt organisiert. Wir begannen mit einer Presentation Debbie News, die über ihre Arbeit berichtete und eine Vielzahl an Dias zeigte. Darunter auch ein gestricktes Kaleidoskop!!! Phantastisch. After seeing all the sweaters at the Arbour House booth, I could no longer resist this book. The details of these vintage knits are very charming. People both at Arbour House stall and at Susan Crawford's Knit on the net booth were wearing projects from the book and they looked so stunning on them. My favourite is the red Sun-Ray Ribbing sweater. Patterns in this book have been originally designed from 1920 to 1949. A second volume of vintage patterns is on its way. What I love about this book is, that they have reprinted the original pattern and next to it you will find a modernized version of it.

Nachdem ich die Pullis im Original am Stand von Arbour House gesehen hatte, konnte ich diesem Buch nicht länger widerstehen. Vintage übt sowieso einen ungemeinen Reiz auf mich aus, nicht zuletzt wegen der liebevollen Details der Designs. Die hier veröffentlichten Muster wurden all zwischen 1920 und 1949 zuerst veröffentlicht. Im Buch findet sich ein Reprint und daneben eine moderne Version der Anleitung. Mein persönlicher Favorit ist der Sun-Ray Ribbing Sweater. Ein zweites Buch ist in Vorbereitung.

I could no longer resist Natural Dye Studio's crochet Queenie's Posy wrap. As you can see, I had to start right away, which meant I had to purchase a crochet hook, too. I bought a knit pro hook 3 mm which was no problem to take aboard the aircraft back to Germany!

Dem Kit für einen Queenie's Posy wrap von Natural Dye Studio konnte ich nicht länger widerstehen. Da ich keine Häkelnadel dabei hatte, aber gleich loshäkeln wollte, mußte ich auch noch eine Knit Pro Häkelnadel 3 mm kaufen. Die habe ich problemlos an Bord des Flugzeugs mitnehmen können - wohingegen mir meine 2.25 mm Holzsockennadeln dieses Jahr das erste mal verweigert wurden!

We spend a lot of time at the button stall. It was not easy to choose from the abundance of buttons or to limit oneself to only a couple of them.
Wir verbrachten sehr viel Zeit am Knöpfestand und es war gar nicht so leicht sich zu bescheiden.

In between, we watched a fashion show by Biggan, an Australian producer of fine merino yarn and lovely designs. However, they were either for people in their 20s or for tall people. Not for me, but a joy to see.

Zwischendurch gab es eine etwas zu lange, aber sonst sehr interessante, bunte Modenschau von Biggan. Das ist ein australischer Wollhersteller von feinem Merino. Die Modelle waren eher für 20-jährige oder aber große Menschen gemacht - also nichts für mich, aber sehr schön anzusehen.

Later in the evening, after the stalls had closed there was another fashion show from various designers and yarn producers. We loved the projects from an upcoming book on Brioche knitting by Nancy Marchant best. I will have to preorder this book. We talked to her the next day and had a closer look at the projects.

Später am Abend, nachdem die Stände "dicht" gemacht hatten, gab es noch eine Modenschau unterschiedlicher Anbieter. Am besten gefielen uns dabei die Modelle aus einem Buch zum Patentmuster (Knitting Brioche), das Ende des Jahres erscheinen soll. Ich werde es wohl vorbestellen. Wir haben am nächsten Tag noch mit der Autorin gesprochen und uns die Modelle näher angeschaut, das war alles sehr interessant.

Oh, and I almost forgot. Ysolda was there too and I talked a bit to her. She was selling preorders to her new book.

Beinahe hätte ich es vergessen. Ysolda war auch da und wir haben uns kurz unterhalten. Sie hat Vorbestellungen für ihr neues Büchlein verkauft.

London calling again - day 1

For the third year in a row, I got away to London for a long weekend. I flew over last Wednesday evening to stay with my dear friend Ingrid.
Das dritte Jahr in Folge, habe ich mir ein paar Tage von Familie und Arbeit frei genommen, um sie in London zu verbringen.

Although I had plans to go to the V & A (one of my favourite museums in London), I got distracted by too many shops, I wanted to see.
Eigentlich hatte ich ja Pläne mein Lieblingsmuseum zu besuchen (V & A), aber dann gab es doch zu viele Läden, in die ich auch wollte. :D



My first stop was Loop in Islington. It is a wonderful, small yarn shop with a very lovely staff. They have gorgeous yarns, books, mags and tools. I bought a ball of Lacy Lamb in "Burnt Orange" (wish you could feel its softness) and two skeins of Madeline Tosh sockyarn to either make another Anne Shirley scarf or come up with something new. I love the colors of this yarn.



Als erstes fuhr ich nach Islingtion, um endlich auch mal Loop zu sehen. Ein sehr hübscher, kleienr Laden mit ser nettem Personal und Unmengen an phantastischer Wolle, Strickzeitschriften, - büchern und - zubehör. Ich verließ den Laden mit einem Knäuel Lacy Lamb "Burnt Orange" und zwei Strängen Madeline Tosh Sockyarn, um entweder noch einen Anne Shirley zu stricken oder mir was neues auszudenken. Ich liebe diese Farben.

Finally, I got myself a copy of Norah Gaughan No3, the latest Debbie Bliss mag and a copy of Selvedge.

Außerdem habe ich mir auch endlich Norah Gaughan No3, das neue Debbie Bliss mag und eine Ausgabe von Selvedge gekauft.



Next, I met Rachel from porpoise to hand over her win. Unfortunately, I was a late after waiting in the wrong Caffe Nero first and so upset about the delay, that I forgot to take a photo! Rachel wore a gorgeous Manon cardigan from Norah Gaughan No 1. I have to knit this cardigan at some point.

Danach mußte ich zum Treffen mit Rachel eilen, die ja das Sockenbuch gewonnen hat. Leider habe ich erst im falschen Caffe Nero gewartet, so dass ich schließlich zu spät kam. Vor lauter Hektik habe ich dann vergessen ein Foto zu machen. Sie trug Manon aus Norah Guaghan No 1 - irgendwann muß ich diese Jacke auch noch stricken.

While I was on Tottenham Court Road, I had to hop into Paperchase, where I bought this cool bag for my daughter and a few things more of their terrific stationary. My son got stretchy animals. Bye the time I left Paperchase, I graved a cup of tea and so treated myself to a Cream tea at Liberty's. Two scones with rosepaddle jam!!!! Heavenly.

Da ich schon mal auf der Tottenham Court Road war, ging ich gleich in den großen Paperchase dort und kaufte die gewünschte Tasche für meine Tochter, ein paar andere Kleinigkeiten und stretchy animals für meinen Sohn.

There were only two things left on my shopping list, tea from Fortnum and Mason and books. So, I went up to Oxford Street to see what Borders had, but - alas - all I found was this:

Nun waren noch 2 Punkte auf meiner Einkaufsliste übrig: Tee von Fortnum und Mason und Bücher. Also nichts wie hin zu Borders in der Oxford Street. Aber, was war das?


Whatever happened to it? Wo ist denn jetzt Borders geblieben?

I took the chance to have a walk along another of my favourite streets in London: Charing Cross Road - home of good bookstores (although, I love Hatchard's and Waterstones on Piccadilly even better). I did not have to return without new reading fudder:

Na, dann gehe ich halt zu einer meiner Lieblingsstraßen Londons: Charing Cross Road - Heimat guter und zahlreicher Buchhandlungen. Obwohl ich ja Hatchard's und Waterstones in der Piccadilly noch lieber mag. In jedem Fall mußte ich nicht ohne Lesefutter wieder nach Hause fliegen:



I suppose, I got a bit carried away. The next days saw less of purchases and more of inspiration. More on the I Knit weekender tomorrow.

Ich bin wohl etwas in Kaufrausch geraten - was einem in London leicht passiert. Die nächsten Tage waren weniger vom einkaufen und mehr von Inspiration geprägt. Mehr über das I Knit Weekend morgen.

Time flies and I am way behind with blogging about things and stuff I did.

had invited me earlier this year to come over and join her for that day. Of course, I had to go. I have passed 4 splendid days in London. (See the Yarn Harlot rave about London - I couldn't put it any better ;-)).

Meine Freundin Ingrid hatte mich vor Monaten dazu eingeladen und natürlich ließ ich mir das nicht zweimal sagen. Ich hatte wieder 4 herrliche Tage mit Ingrid und ihrer Familie in London. (Einen sehr schönen Bericht über London mit tollen Fotos gibt es auf dem Yarn Harlot Blog).


We went to an excellent exhibition at the Royal Academy (Hammershoi) and to the cinema to see The Duchess.



Wir waren in einer phantastischen Ausstellung in der Royal Academy (Hammershoi) und sahen im Kino den neuen Keira Knightley und Ralph Fiennes Film: The Duchess.

Saturday was devoted to the I Knit show. It was not as big as Ally Pally, but there were more than enough stalls to spend money and fill the mind with new impressions. There was even time to sit down, knit and talk to other knitters!

Der Samstag war für den I Knit Day reserviert. Es war nicht so groß wie Ally Pally, aber es gab mehr als genug zu sehen und zu kaufen. Und, erfreulich und erstaunlicherweise noch Zeit sich hinzusetzen und mit anderen Strickerinnen zu plaudern und zu stricken!!!



Stephanie gave a 90 mins talk that was as entertaining and funny as all of her books. I haven't laughed that much in 90 mins since I was a child. There was a long queue for signing afterwards that I did not join, because a.) I was too tired after an eventful day full of yarn and yarn talk and b.) there was a men's fashion show presenting Erika Knight's new book.

Stephanie sprach 90 min und war ebenso streitbar und amüsant wie ihre Bücher. Ich habe nicht mehr so viel gelacht innerhalb von 90 min seit ich ein Kind war. Anschließend gab es eine lange Schlange für Fotos und Autogramme, der wir uns aber nicht anschlossen, weil wir a.) müde und teedurstig waren und b.) eine Modenschau zum neuen Erika Knight Buch begann, die wir sehen wollten.

My suitcase was still packed when I returned with piles of books and tea from Fortnum and Mason. Among the pile of books I brought home is Jane Brocket's latest book:
Dennoch war mein Koffer randvoll als ich abreiste, vor allem mit Büchern und Fortnum and Mason Tee. In dem Stapel Bücher befand sich auch das neue Jane Brocket Buch:

And on Sunday morning we went to Kew Gardens. I love Kew and it is worth a visit in all weather. This time, we took the newly opened Tree Top Walk!
Am Sonntag ging es nach Kew Gardens. Ich liebe Kew und es ist bei jedem Wetter einen Besuch wert. Diesmal gab es als besondere Attraktion einen "Baumwipfel-Spaziergang".



118 steps lead you 18 m up into the air to a 200 m walk on level with the tree tops. Very exciting - and a bit wobbly!

118 Stufen führen einen in eine Höhe von 18 m. Dort kann man dann einen 200 m langen Weg auf Höhe der Baumwipfel entlangspazieren. Sehr aufregend und etwas wacklig!
